I'm aware that many video editors and third-party content creators have been writing to me lately with questions about how to properly use their Epidemic Sound account.
You want to prevent your end customers from receiving complaints from the social networks where they post the videos you deliver to them.
So in this post, I'm going to explain briefly and simply how you have to set up your Epidemic Sound account to have peace of mind and without fear that your works are free of copyright claims. Here we go!
What is Epidemic Sound?
Before I get into it, let me refresh your memory a bit on exactly what is Epidemic Sound. It is an online music library where you will find a huge catalog:
- More than 40,000 audio tracks
- More than 90,000 sound effects
You can use all this material in your projects. But be careful, it's not free. To be able to use this music and effects, you have to be a subscriber to their platform.
Epidemic Sound plans
Epidemic Sound offers two different subscription plans, depending on how you are going to use the music you download:
- Personal Plan
- Commercial Plan
Personal Plan
The Personal Plan, as its name suggests, is designed for individual use. With it, you will be able to add videos with Epidemic Sound music to one account per social network:
- YouTube
- Twitch
- TikTok
- Your personal website
- Your podcast
These accounts can be monetizing without a problem and you won't have any hassle posting videos with music from the platform.
Commercial Plan
On the other hand, there is the Commercial Plan. This is ideal if you are an editor or video creator for third parties, since it allows you to use the music for lucrative purposes.
The main advantage is that you can add up to 3 accounts from each social network:
- 3 YouTube channels
- 3 Twitch accounts
- 3 Instagram profiles
- etc.
In addition, you will be able to independently add the videos that your clients publish on their own social networks, whether personal or corporate. This is the big difference with respect to the Personal Plan.
However, with the Commercial Plan you will not be able to use the music on radio or television channels under any circumstances. For those cases, you will have to contact Epidemic Sound directly and ask for a quote for a specific plan.
Configuring Epidemic Sound to avoid claims
Okay, now that we are clear about the differences between the plans, let's get down to business. I'm going to explain step by step how to set up your Epidemic Sound account when delivering videos to end clients with music from the platform.
Step 1: Log in to your account
Once you have logged in Epidemic SoundClick on the icon with three dashes in the upper right corner. A menu will appear. Click on "Account".
Step 2: "Safe List" tab
Within the Account section, go to the "Safe List" tab. Here you can do several things:
You can add up to 3 accounts for each social network, both yours and your clients':
- YouTube
- TikTok
- Podcast
- Twitch
- Web
Secure list of independent videos
This is the most important option. Every time you deliver a video to an end customer, before you publish it, ask them for the video's URL. Then add it to this list.
All videos added to the safe list will be protected from claims. But if you are not on the list, there will be claims even if you are an Epidemic Sound subscriber.
So you know, every time you deliver a video to a client, get the link and add it here. It's the way to avoid royalty claims.
Invitations
The alternative is to create an invitation. To do so:
- Click on "Create invitation".
- Write the title of the project. For example: "Video submitted to MrBeast giving away 1 million dollars".
- Click on "Create link".
An active link will be enabled. Copy it and give it to your customer along with the video. He will have to validate the request from his account.
In my opinion, it is better if you add the video link yourself, to make sure there will be no problems.
Important: What happens if you stop being a subscriber?
There is one crucial thing to keep in mind: the music you have downloaded can no longer be used if you cease to be an Epidemic Sound subscriber.
The moment you cancel your subscription, the safe list, both social networks and independent videos, will cease to have effect. Therefore, everything published from that moment on will receive claims from the social network.
Summary:- Add the URLs of the videos to the safe list before giving them to your customers- If you stop paying the subscription, the safe list stops working and the videos will receive claims.
And that's all. I hope it's clear to you how to use Epidemic Sound to avoid copyright scares. You know, if you have any questions, write me and I'll try to help you.
